Summer Survival Tips
While we all know it’s imperative to Slip, Slop, Slap whenever we go out in the unforgiving Aussie sun, Slurping plenty of water is also a good idea, particularly if you’re enjoying a XXXX or two ‘round the barbie. Here are some more ideas on how to survive the best season in the Aussie weather calendar.
Swim between the flags.
- Keep a spare pair of thongs in the boot. Frying an egg on the pavement’s one thing, frying your tootsies is best avoided.
- Ideally, keep out of direct sun between 11am – 3pm, the hottest and most UV-damaging part of the day).
- Sit down in front! The ICC Cricket World Cup, Quicksilver Pro Surfing comp, AFL, NRL and Super Rugby seasons all kick off in February and March; get out and enjoy.
- Eat spicy food. Like anyone needs an excuse for a good curry, the fact is spicy food actually cools your body down.
- Chill your chosen beverage in about 15 minutes by wrapping it in a wet paper towel before putting it in the freezer; and remember to set a timer ‘cause you don’t want a burst bottle in there.
- Take a hot water bottle to bed – filled with iced water.
- Buy a plastic bottle with a trigger spray, fill it with water and keep it handy for giving yourself a spritz to cool down (particularly effective if you’re spritzing in front of the air conditioner).
- Pack a cooler – and a beach umbrella / shade – and head to one of the hundreds of natural swimming pools around the coast.
- Turn on the garden sprinkler, strip to your smalls and run through it until you’re exhausted or you’ve created a mud bath. A strip of plastic, some dishwashing liquid and the hose makes a great slip ‘n slide too.
- Go ice skating! Yep, there’s bound to be an ice rink nearby and they’re open all summer too.
- Have a water fight. Fill some balloons, grab a water gun or be the first to commandeer the hose and get spraying.
- And whatever you do, don’t forget the Aeorgard.
