Cosmopolitan

The Cosmopolitan cocktail (Cosmo for short) has been around since the 1970’s and is more popular than ever, thanks in large, to the popular television program Sex and the City. Here’s our take on the cocktail that is quintessentially New York.

Quick Guide

Cosmopolitan

What is it?
A Cosmopolitan, or informally a Cosmo, is a cocktail made with vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice and freshly squeezed citrus juice.

Where is it from?
The origin of the Cosmopolitan is disputed. It is widely believed that the drink was created independently by different bartenders since the 1970’s across both San Francisco and New York. It gained wide popularity in the 1990’s amongst young women by its frequent mention on the hit television program Sex and the City.

What does it taste like?
Our Cosmopolitan cocktail is not too sweet and not too tart. We love adding a little lemon peel to ours. It may look like an unnecessary garnish, but if you do it right, it adds a little tang which hides the strength and scent of the vodka.

Tip

A blue Cosmopolitan may be made by using white cranberry juice instead of the standard red juice and blue curaçao in place of the triple sec.

Ingredients

  • 60ml vodka
  • 30ml triple sec
  • 120ml cranberry juice
  • 15ml fresh lemon juice
  • Lemon peel twist
  • Ice

Method

1. Fill a cocktail shaker with vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, lemon juice and ice.

2. Shake for about 30 seconds until well chilled. Then, strain into a martini glass.

3. Garnish with lemon peel twist.
